Aerobic (Cardio-vascular) Training

Not everyone is an elite athlete, but everybody still has a right to expect to look and feel their best, and to have a sense of well-being. Your fitness is the key!

When people talk about fitness, they generally mean cardio-vascular (aerobic) fitness. This involves aerobic exercise. Aerobic fitness utilises the cardio-vascular system (heart, lungs and blood vessels) to deliver oxygen to the working muscles in order to assist in energy creation.

Most activities rely almost completely on the aerobic system, hence the importance of developing this system. Your level of aerobic fitness is determined by the amount of oxygen that your body can utilise during physical activity. By increasing your body’s ability to use oxygen, the fitter you become and therefore the more activities you can perform.

Weight Training

Weight training is a form of resistance training, which simply means any kind of exercise in which muscles exert force against a resistance. One of the biggest advantages of weight training is that resistance can be applied in a progressive, measurable fashion. After your strength increases enough to lift a certain weight easily, you will increase the weight.

The well known benefits of weight training are an increase in muscle size and strength. The benefits of weight training, however, go far beyond this. Many orthopedic problems are the results of weakness and inflexibility, which are often shrugged off and attributed to the ageing process. Much of this weakness, however, can be attributed to inactivity and a decline in physical fitness, rather than ageing. Weight training is also a key factor in the loss of body fat.
